Any unwanted calls the wife and i say "hold on a second while i turn the chip fat off." Then leave them hanging on whilst you do some banging about. If it's on the mobile say " hang on till i pull into a layby" turn the radio up and keep driving, they soon get the message :;):

Nobody seems to have mentioned the Telephone Preference Service - the missus reckons just mention the TPS, together with "why are you calling me exactly?" - clunk click.

Thanks for that Dave -
We also use the Mail Pref Service

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/what/

It seems to stop most junk - obviously doesn't stop the flyers that the royal mail are paid to send out themselves -
ie the "2 for 1 pizza deal at your local Dominoes" etc.

I use both the mail and the telephone sod-off services and they are a real godsend. The postie is chuffed that he doesn't have to carry quite as much printed spam in his bulging sack, but the fact that, when the phone rings it's almost certainly a relevant call and not some twonk flogging kitchens makes for much more relaxed evenings.

The few eejiits that do call, and it's one or two a month at most, can usually be made to disappear by asking to speak to their supervisor. :D
