I have had 2 good apprentices in the last 20 years
both work for themselves now
thing that does my head in is the lack of ambition with a lot of young lads
I was always ambitious ,might not have made it but it wasnt for want of trying

Just taken on a 20 year old lives 500 yards from me, he's got an old Nokia phone that just about accepts calls he ask permission to go to the toilet haha and he's shaping up to be a good lad 1st week in. So fingers crossed. My old 25 yr old has pissed off to columbia travelling with his Mrs then says he's going living in London! He was often late and about as intelligent as a bag of sand no iniative and God could he make a mess!
He's the sort that would just sit in the van if I was out getting something not be like oh I'll tidy the can up or sweep up on site or sort the tool boxes out etc. More than happy to sit on his phone vaping, but he came as a 23 yr old hopefully got new lad before bad habits, told him gives me a few years I'll give him an education in everything set up to gnomon his own if he wants or just keeping working for me.
He'd done 3 years with small builder 1st year for £40 a week then eventually got upto £50 a day bit of a joke that. Having to school him in ppe and safe working practices he's full of stories of the old days of building game no dust mask or glassses etc he didn't know you could set cut with stihl saws etc.
We'll have to check in every 6 month report on the youth of today

but sometimes its either in you or not

Had a lad working with me who was a gym freak. I asked him why if he was so fit he couldn't manage a heavier load in the barrow and move a bit faster, he replied "I'm saving my energy for the gym tonight".
Great

If he is like the big fella who worked with me for many years non smoker and boxer of some great fights John Westgarth you won't go far wrong ps stopped using smokers years ago and if they did it was off site in there time and not aloud in my truck at all

no matter how many times you tell them ,you always end up picking up dog ends from peoples flower beds etc
I cant change the old guard 50+ but allowing it in the younger crew is storing up trouble

I know what your saying to a certain extent but I won't not employ someone because he's a smoker.
My apprentice is a non smoker but the newish labourer smokes. Not a lot and he asks permission before he does.
In fact he asks permission before he does anything.
Everyone loves the lad, he's very polite, hard working and i'be never heard him swear.
The lad is a semi professional footballer to so he's fit as a fiddle.
I'd rather have him than a hardworking, foul mouth, arrogant lad even if he did as was told.

He was released from Notts forests academy at 16 Tony. He didn't drink or smoke before that.
It does look unprofessional in 2016.
I really miss the 80's 90's.
