Do i crush and use or muckaway - 480m2 courtyard and drive

Chaps I'm an amateur I don't do this stuff for a living. Basically I just wanted to ask a technical question. I'm going to try and tackle my front garden, half of which is rough grass and weeds, the rest is badly laid concrete (no sub-base under concrete that is a couple of inches thick in places). I was thinking that if I dug up the earth area to a depth of around 350mm, I could break up the concrete and lay it down there before covering it with some proper type 1, getting a roller on it etc. Does that sound sensible....

no, is the short answer. You don't say how much there is to break up. Is there enough to warrant the hire of a mini crusher, or was you thinking of breaking all your windows and eyes, by doing it with a sledge hammer? Work out how much you have to muck away and get a skip in keeping concrete seperate from the muck. Dig out and put in dtp1. Better job all round.

Thanks for that reply. The amount to break up is roughly 6mtrs wide x 14long. The grassed area is about the same or maybe a little larger, which is why I was thinking I could dig out the grassed area, break up/take the concrete, then spread it over the excavated grassed area.... You definitely don't think I should chance this...?

it is up to you and your local prices. I used a crusher when i did my front drive, was it worth it? close call based prices at the time.
I put 14t through the crusher in a day, the machine cost about £300, the cost of disposal and buying in new would have cost about the same (£150 disposal, £150 supply), the advantage being the product i got out the crusher was better than that delivered, also i could fill the barrow direct from the crusher (shifting type 1 by shovel is HARD work)
a large % of the £300 was delivery, a second days hire was cheaper and wouldn't have included delivery, so i would have been in profit.
presuming you concrete is 4" or 100mm thick i estimate you
6*14*0.1 = 8.4 m3 = *1.4 = 12t
based on your disposal/purchase cost, it will determine weather its viable.
