always feel sorry for old people who have been ripped off, we expect if the price is too cheap its a con but your gran just thinks thats the rate. ???

Would you say the drain would need to go all the way along the wall and door or just infront of the door ? also how would be best to fit it ? lift the edge blocks fit the drain then cut the blocks and re lay or lift more fit the edge whole an then re lay up to them ?

i'd do all the way to keep everything uniform. Lift as much as you need to do the job. Which option of draining are you going with?

going to just go for the drain along the front dischargeing in to the sub base as it should be ok i hope ! as the customer has told me when the drive sloped to the level of the path that it used to flood there

ok so now im stumped i went to cut her lawn today an relised that theres nothing i can do to help her cos the builder has raised the height of the drive against the "wall" of the garage and its only made of ply ! ??? after a bit of a chat i found out that the old drive is still under there an he charged her 2 grand

now i definately know why its so crap he has been back though an drilled a hole in the little wall to let the water out but it didnt so hes going to talk to his mate an let her know ..............

she dosnt know what to do for the best cos shes all on her own an is worried if she reports them they might come round

its allready starting to sink in places makes you sick dosnt it aparently he kept saying well i did do it cheep thing is though she didnt ask for a cheap job
worst part of it is the door wont even open now an she cant get out on her mobility scooter

personally think that people who rip others off (old and disabled should be burned at a stake as a warning too all others).
I`ve no problem with the contractors who charge twice as much as anyone else (think everest, a fool will always be parted with their money) but even if you quote cheap you still do a proper job. ???

Michael there is a term in law "fit for purpose" and not being able to open the garage door after having the driveway replaced or as in this case having a driveway overlaid is not "fit for purpose"

she is well within her rights as a consumer to have this work rectified by the moron who attempted to carry out this work because contractors can't do that standard of workmanship and expect to get away with it

she is well within her rights to contact citizens advice or trading standards who will deal with it in the correct manner or she could take the contractor to court herself

its not a police matter unless he does threaten her in which case she can call the police and they will deal with it

why does he have to talk to his mate, he laid the driveway he should of known what to do ?

you say she paid 2 grand, what size is the driveway ?

Sorry to drag this up again but i havent yet done anything on this because we were waiting for him to come back he didnt anyway heres a better pic

im a bit worried about the fact that the water may still come in even with the drain as i think its comeing in further down if you see what i mean ive been asking around but i cant find anyone who can give a quote for redoing the whole thing

can anyone on here give me a rough idear what is a good honest price ? ???

I know you are trying to look after your customer, but I can't help but think it's only going to backfire. Are you going to project manage (for a fee) this third party, who you don't know to do the works? if no one from here volunteers, and dave_l is the only one local I think, you could use checkatrade to find someone is seems as good as place as anywhere to start separating the wheat from the chaff.

Hi,

On a similar subject, I've got a linear drainage channel in front of my garage which is not proving enough to stop the garage flooding. This is because (a) the drive slopes towards the house (b) there is a 1 foot gap between the channel and the garage door © at this time of year, leaves get in the channel.

Obviously, I know that clearing the leaves more often would help but I'm looking for a solution that will survive the heaviest of downpours.

I'm thinking of a bigger drain towards one end of the garage door (away from the house thankfully), where the water comes in. I'd like the water to be able to get through but not the leaves. Would putting a metal gauze over the drain be a way of doing this? Are there any other solutions to hold up solid waste?

Please comment on my ideas. Anyone offering a solution that they can provide will likely get the job. I'm in Billericay, Essex.

where do your drains run to john?
the bit between the door and the drain does it fall to the drain?
have you considered a water bar in the floor just behind the door?
billericay , is out of my sphere sadly,but I am sure we have people on the forum from that way
