3k is too cheap for 48M2
the stone will cost 1k or thereabouts
skips 2/= £400
10 tonne of type 1 =250
5 tonnes of sharp around 200
25 bags of cement 125
leaves about a grand for labour and profit
I dont know what was agreed so hard to comment but 1 good thing is they seem to be laying on a full bed
what are they going to point with?

Really appreciate all of your replies. The job has been completed as of yesterday and we were told not to walk on it for a day. We've now gone out and walked over it and many of the slabs move wobble and lift. We're pretty sure none of them are adhered to anything and so I guess all of the slabs are at risk. Builder is now putting pressure on to pay up. We're not sure where we stand really? Any thoughts appreciated.

Pretty awful all round. Its clearly not laid properly from a technical construction point of view or a neat aesthetic point of view.
Did they put in a proper sub base? That at least might be salvageable but someone who has laid the paving this badly perhaps should not be trusted to have done the sub base right?
The slabs will be able to be re-used as the very dry mix they look to have used wont be very well stuck to them.
What was the surface before and what preparation did they do?

Thanks for the reply and advice.
They didn't use hardcore as a sub base but we're not builders and were under the impression they knew what they were doing. They laid the slabs directly on top of a dry mix of sand/cement on top of the soil below and used a similar mix for jointing.
Luckily we've only paid a deposit so far (£1450) but builder is pressuring us to pay the balance off. We've not yet told him that we won't be paying anymore money to him. Our next step is to try and find someone professional to make the patio good or the cost of a replacement.
Any advice or guidance on this matter would be really appreciated.

If they didn't dig out and install a sub base of compacted hardcore then there is nothing they have done which is salvagable really and there is no element of the job that will not need re-done.
As a result its hard to justify them being paid anything aside from the cost of the slabs which can be re-used.
Check out the CAB website for details of your legal rights and dont pay them anything else at this point.
