OK, ta.

I did actually go to the 'factory' ( farm outbuilding) to see these slabs and they seemed OK but the ones I got must have been seconds.

I have looked into circles from the names you mentioned, but indeed, they are big bucks at around £400 and isn't anything like the design I'm looking for.

I'm going to go for wet cast and use a sealer like Romex, otherwise this project is not going to get finished.

Go for it.
When laid and grouted up they always look better than in the pack.

Indeed, but I ordered from them anyway. Couldn't be any worse than the first two cowboys I tried and in any case, I just wanted to get the bloody patio done before winter. They're down now and look OK, except I cracked one and each slab is covered in small triangular shadows - possibly due to some of the aggregate near the surface? After a week or so away on my hols. the marks seem to have mostly gone.

I'm looking to point the slabs now and was going to use good old sand/cement as I'm concerned that any marking on the slab face will be sealed in if I use Romex or a similar resin product.
I could clean them first of course, but it seems that cleaning wet cast slabs is full of pitfalls, regarding too much pressure, too much hard brushing....
