The guys did not manage to move all the concrete snots ( blobs) off. So after the HCl I power washed with the Karcher and let it dry. Then I found somewhere a mention that B & Q brick cleaner has some HCL in it. So I bought 5 lts. This I diluted 1 to 1 ( The container says 1 to 2) and brushed in hard and left it 10 to 15 mins. Then out with the Karcher again.

Result is that the B & Q stuff has cleaned the dirt out of the tarmac and it now more or less blends in with the HCL treated areas. I have a slope down to the road and so the water and mess gets away well.

I am going to leave it all until next spring to see if the winter weather helps. I am quite pleased with my 'recovery action'.

So your definately recommending the B&Q stuff over the the pure HCL?

My drive too is on a slope that runs onto some block paving (I live in a cul-de-sac with block paving on the road) and feared the HCL may fix my drive but bleach the road !

I will try the B&Q and let you know.

You could try putting some sand or summat to divert the wash down the drain

Hi Guys,

brick acid is the way to go, but I always scrub gently with a wire brush as well. Brick acid can damage the tarmac a bit, so less is more.

For renovating tarmac, you want either Masterseal or Liquid Road. they are both bitumen based emulsions imported from the USA. Absolutely top stuff, good enough for car park use in the States. A quick google should find a supplier/ contractor.

To all the most helpful people who replied and offered guidance. MANY THANKS

The B&Q Brick cleaner did the job! Then some torrential rain helped. The end result is not perfect but acceptable for the age of the tarmac drive.

The whole project has pleased the neighbours and compliments are regularly spoken.

Next job is to track down that Masterseal / Liquid Road and next spring - who knows . . .
