the apprenticeship now is a waste of resources IMHO,
way too much emphasis on HSE,not enough on real life skills

I'm involved in creating the new apprenticeship for "Modular Paving" and I've been instructed that the course cannot last for more than 2 years and that the apprentices should spend no more than around 30 days in college over those two years.
In my day, streetmasonry was 4 years, with college more or less once a week. You cannot possibly produce a tradesman in 2 years - they might have some knowledge, but they are still way short of experience.
