I can see where he's coming from, Ive seen 'time-served' ground workers use a wacker on the bedding layer (sand only) then sprinkle in cement on the top layer, it does happen. Ive also saw profession hard landscapers use just a sand bedding layer, with no cement as the walk way they were paving was edged. Horse for courses, but if this guy has only seen one application (maybe one of the above) he may think its gospel

I was *taught* to lay slabs like that henpecked, luckily common sense kicked in.
when we are demolishing old place it amazes me to find bodges that builders did maybe 100 years ago
we removed an old vent stack pipe ,expecting to change it to plastic, but the original builder hadn't bothered to connect it to the run,the connection was in the IC and the pipe went into the ground but they weren't connected ??? ???

Just goes to show how wrong you can be.
I came here thinking I'd get some genuine help and guidance, only to be mocked and laughed at by some over sized ego's that are too far up ther own arse to care when someone needs help.
Thanks for nothing .
You definetly need "help" chaz. Some of the guys giving advice on this site do so in our own time. Some stay up till 4.00am and others get up at that time and log on waiting for the kettle to boil so to have a nice cuppa before starting a 14 + hour day. We do this as a hobby ( sometimes with the wife protesting that we give more attention to this than to her good self ) not for pay, just because it makes us feel good to help genuine DIYers do a good job. Sometimes we refer to the main index, or archives, to give an accurate answer. All we want is for you to ask sensible questions after reading the manual. Your lucky not to have suffered the wrath of Mc Cormack. As for other posts ie, "time served men" sprinkling cement on top, are you sure they are because they must of been taught by John Wayne etc. I advise you Chaz, to start again. I will overlook your little rant and put it down to inexperince.

You seem to missing the point. I'm a member of many different forums and have never been treated like this and would never dream of responding to a 'newbie' in this manner. I would help anyone, no matter how 'dumb' the question may seem, even if it is already on the main site and could have easily been overlooked or misunderstood.
The purpose of the forum is to give and receive help and guidance. I have read through the main site and although I think it is a brilliant site, I am just a little confused. 'Wet mix', 'dry mix', 'soft mix', 10:1...6:1...8:1.??
I have heard a lot of contradicting advice, so I just wanted a bit of clarity that's all.
I fail to see how my question was any differnt from 'Welshcat's' above, who seems to have been a member for a couple of years.
The time you put in to posting on this forum is obviously an indication of how passionate you are about the topic, especially if you are putting this before your family. So this makes it even more confusing as to why you would laugh and 'slag' someone off rather than use that wasted tme and energy to just give a helpful answer.
I can assure you 'Seanandruby', that this was far from an 'inexperienced little rant'. All I was doing was voicing my opinion on how I was treated. I'll 'overlook' your response and put it down to inexperience in communicating and showing respect.

Oh dear chazb
i dont think the guys are mocking you they are just finding the question you ask a little stranage
like they have said all the awnsers to your questions are on the main site, and to be honest have a read of it and then if you have any questions these lot will help you,
that i am very sure of as they have done just that with me..
there are sites out there that all you get is crap and i tend not to use them this is by far one of the best sites for FREE yes FREE correct help and advice by profesionals who do the job most days.
im not having a go at you and im sure the others are not aswell but im sure if you have a look on the main site the picture will become clear.
hope to help

'Wet mix', 'dry mix', 'soft mix', 10:1...6:1...8:1.??
as a DIYer a wet mix would be more use to you chaz, if you have an electric mixer, you would normally use about 12 heaped shovels of grit sand to 12.5kg of cement (half a bag) and about 2/3 rds of a 2 gallon bucket of clean water
all this depends on the size of your shovel and the wetness of the sand
as the mix is agitating you need a consistency where it slips through the agitators rather than turns over, this can be adjusted by adding a little more water
IT is not recommended to lay slabs on top of slabs

I think you're being over-sensitive. You've not been "slagged" at all, except perhaps in your own over-sensitive mind.
You asked questions that are more than answered on the main website, but that wasn't enough for you. Instead, you want someone to re-write what is already on the main website: why should they? Hundreds of thousands of people use this site every month, and very few of them have a problem understanding what is written in the bedding section. Even fewer come here and demand that we stop what we're doing and explain it all once again for their benefit.
So:do you think the problem lies with the lads and lasses who give their time to man this forum, or could the problem lie elsewhere. Do you think it might be worth re-reading the extensive advice already provided?
There's no favouritism or cliques in the Brew Cabin, least of all from me - I'm equally horrible to everyone. People get the answer they deserve. If you stamp your feet and throw your toys out of the pram, then don't be surprised if you get your arse spanked.
