I took time off work to complete my pointing all in one go 
To ensure a consistent mix I actually used a mug to do the measuring :p
Pig of a job and my knees hurt a lot!!

well if its in now all you can do is suck it and see mate
if it fails, dig it out in the spring and redo it with the proper gear

well, finally finished my patio this weekend - just the sleepers were remaining to do so thought i'd wait until they were down before i photo'd it as promised - nothing flash nor expensive, but basically it's 30m2 of hamilton deep riven (from wickes - total cost about £250), with ready mixed lime mortar (from the new build site i'm living on - the mortar survived the winter completely fine without any lifting, contrary to what some of you said might happen, but yes, time will tell), i think the colour goes well, as the mortar is slightly pinky...
the sleepers are tanelised hardwood, i've just sealed them with waterproof decking sealer, a shed load
thanks to all of you who gave me any advise about my project

Hi Dave, just took a look at your patio, don't take this the wrong way but is that staining on the slabs or is it the colour/design?

the slabs are grey, quite a light grey as you can tell by the general colour - the darker patches are water (my daughter was playing with her watering can!)
i presume you're talking about the dark bits you can see?
ps you may want to edit your post to remove my photo's which have been added in again
