By "cobble" sets, I suppose I just meant those square headed, granite (?) sets. I'm not sure why I used the term "cobble" - sure I've read this somewhere
But at what point do I put in my sets? After the sub-bed, but before the dry mix? Or after the dry mix - just bury them in to the required depth (i.e. to be level with the flags)? I assume I just use wet mortar to bed the sets in (whether direct onto the sub-bed or into the dry mix)?
Grateful for any tips

If it was me then I would lay any part of the border that abutts a wall first, then the flags, then the rest of the border.
Only free edge border has to be on wet mix and don't forget to haunch it so it can't move.

setts (granite) are normally laid on a dry mix and hammered down to the level with a rubber mallet
theres a fair bit on the main site about setts and laying them

Wildfang, in your case the setts will need to be as Bob said. I did exactly the same and used the setts to frame my flags. The flags butt up again the house on one side, then finish next to a gravelled area. But however you are doing it I would lay your setts in mortar and make sure you haunch them on the outside edge to stop them moving. Work from the house side and put your setts in last.

Thanks Colin
Sounds like you did more or less what I plan.
Sorry more help please -
Did you wet mortar the sets direct to the sub-base or to the dry-bed layer atop the sub-base (or did you just add a bit of sand to the sub-base for purpose of mortaring in the sets)?
Do I need to haunch ? In my case, on the other side of the sets there will be the mass of clay soil under my lawn. If I do need to hauch - what with - more of the same wet mortar ? concrete? and how would I hide this haunching bit under the lawn?
Also I'm of the opinion that if the sets will act as my mortared in edging, I will not need to wet bed the outside edge flags. That being the case, I assumed I should lay the SETS FIRST in their wet mortar, then mortar joint them, THEN lay 10:1 dry bed followed by flags. What think you??
