I take both points on board, had a discussion with said contractor this morning and he apologised accepting (hands up)the responsibilty for not adhering to B.Standards. We reviewed entire site measuring trial holes for my peace of mind and are back on track. I must add that standards in this country have declined rapidly compared to 20 years ago, but as I am home through out the day I 'inspect,what I expect' very sad but that is the way it is....thank god for this site!!

And that's why I have no faith in any of the manufacturer-sponsored installer schemes. I hear the same tale, or a variation of it, a dozen times a week at this time of year.

It's not fair on the customers who pay top dollar in the belief that they will somehow get a better standard of work, and it's not fair on those good contractors who feel thay have to pay the subs to be a part of the scheme otherwise the customers will think they are just cowboys.

When contractors blatantly contravene the laying guidance in BS7533:3 and the installation protocal issued by the manufacturers for compliance with their own scheme, the offending contractor should be booted out. But they're not. Because that would mean losing 400-ish quid in subs every year.

It's WRONG!
Well said Tony,the whole truth and nothing but the truth;

I got in the first marshalls layer support sceem,£400 for nothing at all,never again, if your work is up to british standards who need to chuck £400 at marshalls it should be free as advertising for them all the way,
thats my 2 pence worth

in fairness it works well for the best installers, especially people who just do drives and patios
so not really worth it for me,MSH,Dig Dug Dan,setts, giles,sean,flowjoe etc.

but people like ken, george, mickg, matty brock who are more or less pure drive and patio men it makes sense

I like doing paving but its just not profitable compared to normal building work

and like a bank robber ,I go where the money is
