I just do it that way so when you screed the compacted sand your only taking off a few mm which is pretty easy, laying block on loose screeded sand is no good in my eyes, did it once and it all went pear shaped

utterley ker-nackered today - thought I had strong wrists but after a day of screeding across a 3.7 metre gap they now feel like they're made of glass.

I think I put down too much sand yesterday (filling to the fpl) as today I reckon we shifted at least a tone of sand from screeding the layer.

Yep - should have taken heed of various posts here and put down less, lack of experience and most propbably lack of general common sense on my part dictated otherwise.

Have had to screed twice to get the levels down to my 42mm below fpl, and think I'll have to screed again tomorrow to get the 'snooker table' (perfectly flat) effect I'm after.

Now I am at my 42mm below the fpl, I'm wondering if I should compact it once more due to taking so much off?

Or will this drop the layer too much down and mean I have to add more on and screed yet again.

Going out of my small mind!

So close to finishing now...

No dont wack now that you have screeded it, get the blocks down then wack. Are you leaving it overnight, usually i try to screed an area and lay the block on the same day.

DN thanks for your reply,
yep leaving it overnight as got dark and was starting to rain, we covered the entire area with plastic sheets though, should be ok for tomorrow am you think?

Also the surface this afternoon got well and truly p1ss*d on by the rain which is the point we went to b&q to get plastic sheets, was rained on for at least 3/4 hour.

So no to another compact hopefully be ok for blocks tomorrow?

forgot to say that the area is getting its very final screed first thing tomorrow (3rd screed in all) to 'titivate' the final layer and get perfect.

No dont compact again, it will end up to low and you will have to rake it all up and start again. I did a job where the screeded sand got rained on, when it came to compact the block, orangy crappy water came up between the blocks, stained everything and the whole pavement ended up like jelly!

shee1t? ....well ...the sand didn't 'seem' waterlogged and it's going to pee down again here in notts, but we've covered it up with sheets so hoping will be ok.

A couple hours rain won't hurt screeded/compacted sand,personally i never cover screeded sand as the chances are you will direct any puddles of water on the sheet into the sand,

only torrential downpours are your enemy
main thing now is get the blocks down and do the cuts
the final KDS and wack can wait

cheers boys, no more compacting then, (until whacking blocks in) - but needs a final sreed tomorrow, thanks for all your help.

These high maintenance newbies eh? (although becoming less and less clueless all the time)

I'm off for a well earned pint or seven. (& give you gents some peace)
