pics 21 to 28 old tarmac drive over laid with paving. tarmac not moved in 15 years. bottom 10 mtrs ripped out to accomodate new level. 18 months later no probs. to be honest differencial movement not such a big deal in driveway construction. having said that if tarmac woz shot to bits would not do but you can almost nearly always tell if existing drive was well constucted. even if i do spell experience wrong does not mean I havent got it LOL james :p

If the bitmac is demonstrably sound and not falling apart, settling, cracked or moving, you can lay CBPs over the top but you have to consider what will happen to the surface water that gets through the joints into the laying course. If there's no escape route for it, then you get fluidisation/liquefaction of the laying course, and that's the end of your nice paving.
Most residential contractors would prefer to rip out the bitmac, as it can often be a bit of an "unknown quantity" on a private driveway. If there was a hint of a shadow of a smidgen of doubt, I'd rip it out too.

broke threw tmac on 1mtr square grid to provide drainage. like i said if tmac is in good condition no probs. most domestic jobs i rip out and start again . LOL JAMES

if any doubt rip it out. Saves any heartache later. Dont just make do, do it right.

Been reading with interest as have this problem. Main man makes a good point about drainage (esp as my area floods) so will probably end up ripping up about 150 SqM of 1970s tarmac.
Question is what to do with the big pile of Tarmac ? Big cost these days in landfill tax. Any way it could be reused as a base ?

Nope, it's not a lot of use to anybody - ours just goes to landfill.
Unless you can find a farmer who has a home for it.......but I didn't say that.
