Seems to me there are different situations where one or the other compaction methods is most appropriate.
I did a walk this summer that I used the 1" (25mm) and no compaction, and it worked fine. But I had dry sand and EZ access to the walk. I am glad that I now have Tony's method to use when conditions dictate.
