no main contractor (big ones) will accept rigger boots anymore and that has basically been the way for about 8yrs. amec were the first to ban them and the rest followed.

I was told and shown how to wash my hands after usung the toilet facilities on a Laing o rourke nhs site, I explained to the site agent that I had a BSc with honors, it wasnt well received by the pompous arse hole of a site manager.

I was told to wear goggle inside a machine on an Orourke site. Got a telling off by some idiot with a personality transplant and told to come to his office in Monday AM PROMPT! Yes Sir, I said, asked him the details again, got him to draw a map to his office. He obliged willingly as I was obviously some sort of moron.

You joke Boss but if someone under the age of 18 is allowed on site they must have a note from their mum (or guardian) stating that they are allowed to be there. ???

The worlds gone mad. We had the environmental health over at our place earlier in the year. Bearing in mind that some of the stuff we are doing at our place carries some serious h&s risks the only thing that the officer said was that "we should put signs on the roofs to say fragile roofs". When i asked why he said that in case any intruders tried to climb on the roof. We put the sign up to keep him happy, but it does make you laugh

recently we did a 10 minute course on how to.....insert ear plugs, truth. Giles who was your site manager on lor site? All these years and i've been inserting them wrong, makes you think if i've been inserting everything else correctly :;): :p

Gavin somebody, little scottish fella in a suit and specs with immaculate rigger boots. he might not have been laing but the sub contractors site manager but he was a worse pedant than you sean.

I know we all moan about the HSE ,but does anyone remember tales of building sites in the old days?
first day at college in 1984 and the instructor told us that the life expectancy of builders was 50 years
obviously heavy drinking,fry ups, and fags had a lot to do with this,but up till the 80's sites were very dangerous places
my old fella and his mate were given £20 bonus in 1966 to knock an 80 foot 9 inch chimney down with sledge hammers
standing on the very brickwork they were knocking down :O
course at a time
also demolished a bakery at bedford and shovelling loads of blue stuff into barrows then skips
blue asbestos anyone?
lads wear hi viz and safety boots as a matter of course now
if it saves 1 life then it is worth it

Too true Tony. I was on a CIOB course and the video played was an 'instructional' video on site basics. it was from about 1976. The camera was focusing on one hoddie who had placed a floor joist to span two corners of the scaffold on a house dog-leg. Suppose it saved time and avoided the brickies. He had the usual 12 brick stack on his shoulder and the joist really flexed in the middle ,so much so, it made your toes curl. The tutor hadn't even noticed the safety breaches as 1, he was teaching site management 2, the last time he was on site he must have been in short pants. :laugh: :laugh:
