Great thanks this asphalt idea could be an option. In fact we 'could' use existing driveway if it would help? Ok this has been damaged due to construc traffic but still sound base for most of drive tho were going to re loacte but could keep if substantially helps budget. Do you know where I can see pics of decor asphalt? Not szourced any yet on google chrs

I would advise against rolling in decorative chips into a macadam surface, the first sign of cold weather and they'll pop out.
Chips rolled into a fresh surface is a trait of our travelling friends.

I fully respect what you do for a living Dave but I strongly disagree that it's a sign of travellers and that it always fails. It's a very commonly used finish on asphalt over here and I've never seen the chips pop out even on badly done ones. They do pop out of bitmac sometimes but I wasn't advocating using that.

no i think tar and chip is a surface dressing for roads that are already surfaced but are becoming worn and slippy. Asphalt with a coated red or white 12 or 20mm chip rolled into it is what you should look into.

i think that a hot rolled asphalt with coated chippings looks too 'industrial' for driveways, but will no doubt do the job if the right stuff is put down.

Thanks PHil had a look at what I think it may be and that would look too industrial.back to sq 1 maybe! Anyway will keep digging! Any ideas this and appreciate everyones responses. Got an existing Tarmac though really messed up now so if this helps to keep this re costs then we will stick with this drive route rather than re locate. Just could not go for something which got growth on it, but must also look the part Coloured bitumen looks good but does anyone know prices and is it durable? Chrs WIllis

coloured asphalt is durable, but would it live up to your expectations? most property owners expect a 'billiard table' blemish free surface, but forget that asphalt is an engineering material that simply provides a load bearing waterproofed surfacing. the cheapest coloured asphalt would be red, as it is pigmented black bitumen but looks more maroon. some larger asphalt suppliers do proper colours using clear binders. like i said previously, be warned that it will show tyre marks and fade with weathering.

Ok compris!! Will keep thinking!! Dont think ive got there yet as I know there are problems with a lot of things mentioned - any ideas welcome as strong feeling maybe we go indian stone or resin bonded if can afford - will be a home brew though as cant afford professioanl contractor on resin simple as that. chrs!

As a guide....
Resin Bound
£40 to £60 per square metre.
Allow an additional £20 per square metre to install a concrete or tarmacadam base to an appropriate specification.
Give me a call and we'll get a contractor to quote.

£20 a metre would just about cover the bitmac works in preparation for resin bound surfacing! Just quoted for one today!
