personally I'd just knock him the f*ck out and not waste my time with him. Then I'd send him back to whatever planet he and his cronies came from. Those union feckers have played a significant part in the mess we're in.
My cousin is married to a guy high up in a union. He gets paid an absolute fortune and is a right snob. He couldn't be any further away from the people he's supposed to be representing.
you bunch of grumpy old bastids. the way you boys are tarring all the young lads with the same brush im not suprised you dont get the best out of your labourers. admittedly i try 3 labourers before i find a good one but thats nothing to do with age. we have to teach these lads whats expected and how its done. a good lad is easy to spot, he will pick up a broom and sweep when theres nothing for him to do. show them whats expected and they will do the business, make em work on here and there, but at the end of the week an extra tenner goes a long way in a lads mind. dont expect a 17 yr old fresh from college to "get it" off the bat. i like to think my lads are good grafters because i treat them well, take the piss out them all day long, but most of all i take the 3 mins to show them how things are done and whats expected. most of all work them hard as you can and if they come back after the 1st week you got someone you can mold in to a good lad.
my old man still works even though he's an old dribble nose, but now he works for his old labourers who love the old boy, hes a good laugh on site, shows people a trick or two and still works anyone under the table.. they pay him fair money and do him a favour keeping him busy in his retirement. what goes around comes around.

thats the reason why i currently only employ poles, a race of people that seems to be have been, for some reason, nurtured with some kinda work ethic.
its naff all to do with the minimum wage! thats there to stop folk paying us young lads 20 quid a week, and lets face it, by your post if you could get away with it you would! Im 23 myself, started with the firm im at when i was 15, been away and back a few times. Now i have my own squad, run the jobs im given and if it werent for folk showing me and me being able and willing to learn it then I wouldnt still be employed within that firm.
Perhaps if you employed more productive staff you wouldnt need to employ a fleet of poles? Sounds more like yes-men you want rather than grafters.

The government are now offering 1k to small businesses to take on the long term unemployed, the reason being that struggling companys just arent prepared to take the risk paying a no-hoper good money for little if any return.
great idea, but if it doesnt work out, you've got dead wood round your neck for 6 months before you get the money.
personally, when i've had to get "bodies" in to help out in a busy spell they've been dead ones,so i apologise for my jaundiced view but you can only judge from your own experiences.
Agree, I moan about Labourers, but you pay peanuts ye get monkeys. I just let a labourer go, good guy but kept trying it on, with days off at least once a week, and bit of back stabbing when he thought I'd gone off site, and he was 45.. good at his job too.
Picked up a couple of casual lads to fill in for a bit and thei both 26 and like chalk and cheese..one keeps going all day, cleans up as you said when he,s quiet, can take critisism without sulking and generally wants to be busy, the other, who I found smokes dope, is ok in small doses but quick to stand about, on his phone or having a fag or just generally doing nowt...wonder if the rise in canabis consumption has anything to do with young lads attitude, the amount of lads you see smoking a spliff on the morning journey to work is quite astonishing ...working lads and school age
drugs(including drink) and work dont mix
its dangerous enough without that going on at work
having said that, when i was young and stupid
"i was young and stupid"
none of us are perfect
LLL
personally i dont care what they do at the weekend or in their own time, had one in jail on monday (old firm game, upset at the result lol). What people do in their free time is their business, if it affects our business that's different...
i have a lad working for me who likes a smoke, but he's been an exception to the rule as normally those lads are dossers, this guys knows i wont have it on my time and hes good with that. ive had drinkers that were worse....
ive worked with stoners and drinkers, and they arent all bad. One boy was a great grafter after 3 cans first thing in the morning, and he wouldnt use any machinery by his own choice. He would just bash on with the job at a good pace and stick to it all day. Had some stoners who were similar, although one in particular who was the laziest shite ive ever met.
Worked on a site next to the Hibs stadium, the cherry picker operator used to take himself up as high as it would go in the middle of nowhere and casually puff away. He looked awfully like a short (young) Meat Loaf lol.
Not against anything meself, but as you say, if it effects business it's bad. One problem I have is lad's views and their sharing them with the clients and neighbouhood.
What you want to think is nothing to do with me but I've lost count of the times when some lad's spouted of about Race, sexuality or even what they got up to with their girls and I've been standing talking to the client, just out of sight but fully in ear range.
I tell lads to keep it down but once the machinery's going and everyone gets louder, I'd like a nice big hole to open up!!
