some of the old irish fellas over the allotments knew it was going to be a bad winter back in october
peter monaghan and jim sheridan guaranteed it,but I cant remember their reasoning
will ask them
we were working in shorts this time last year
I feel for fellas on the big sites as with elfin safety they will be lucky to do anything this week

there s a hell of a lot to be said for the old 'tricks of the trade'!! they didnt have technology, just had to work it out and have a good ole memory i suppose!
it was this time lasy yr me and shaun were sat in a pub on a fri evening, sunburnt!! the old farmers mate at the bar piped up and said the fields were too hard and dry to roll, and that we could just do with 2 inches of rain.................!!!
Since that day, it aint bleeding stopped!

Am I being over cautious by not doing any laying of Indian stone in this they reckon it will only just reach 3c today and then be -5c tonight??
Problem is if it is like this all week I will be too far behind to catch up and need to start my next job first week in April.

calculated risk then, hve you got any insulation lieing around tha you could cover the slabs with and then hessian sheet over the insulation, saw highways out repairing a stone bridge over a canal and they'd covered it in cavitiy wall insulation and hessian.

got hessian and frost proofer for mix but I was always told it has to be 3 and rising for a mix and had thought about buying kingspan, but to me it wouldnt make any difference if the ambient temp is not high enough to start with.

you know yourself george,if you knock up gear today it will fail
next client has to understand that we physically cannot work in minus or close to zero temps

Thanks Tony, I know really which is why I not doing it today but it eats away at me when I make the decision to not lay and it could mean the whole week is a right off

you have made the correct decision George, its very cold today with a bitter wind and will be even colder tonight and is not the right conditions to be laying paving

Cold here in Essex today . Hit the gas this morn . Been waiting 3 hours to be fixed . Might be a blessing in disguise . At least we are warm in the van .

Yer tell me about it, I've just been doing what virgin could not.
They was supposed to put Internet in but wanted to take my drive up to run the cable, I told them it was already there, so they sent 2 guys to connect it they dug the pavement, but could not find my connection to go onto so then cancelled the job.
This is what I found when I dug it up this morning ( I know I'm on the pavement law breaking )
You can see the black trunking with the wires in that goes under my drive...
All done now

Thanks guys deep down I knew it was right but like I say it grates at me especially when you see others carrying on. On way back from merchants this morning saw a general builder with mixer set up and I assume he was going to carry on with the brickwork on the extension he was on.
Its nice to know that other people would have made the same decision. Thanks
