So close, yet so far... advice on edging

Hello Everyone,

This website has been absolutely fantastic in helping me lay my first patio. I've done all of the hard stuff; two tonnes of MOT sub base through the house in buckets, same with a tonne of sharp sand and 96 300x400mm pavers. It has all gone down and I have a flat(ish) patio. All that needs to be done now, apart from replacing the hall carpet, is to edge around the slabs.

I have laid the slabs on a screed bed (8:1 sharp to cement) over a well compacted MOT1 sub-base. Under the majority of the patio the sub-base and bedding layer extends the recommended 20cm from the run of pavers. However, due to the OH's insistence of another row of pavers, part of our "L" shaped patio has only 5-10cm of sub-base under it (less in places). There is a 5-10 cm step down from the top of the slabs to the grass.

As I put the slabs down on a dryish mix, there is now very little bedding layer around the edge and I am in need of some advice as to how to 1) Retain the bedding layer to stop it crumbling away (it's reasonably solid but ain't gonna last!), 2) edge the patio so it doesn't look naff.

I should have put the last layer down on mortar, I know, but any help or advice as to how I can finish this job off without ripping any slabs up would be greatly appreciated.

Hi LLL,

Many thanks for the reply. I had read through the page you suggested but got lost in the heat (quite literally last weekend!) of the laying.
If I were to dig out the bedding and support the haunch on the subbase, would this suffice? Would I do better removing some of the bedding under the last slabs while im at it and compacting mortar in too? I appreciate we are probably in bodge territory now!
