20mm indian sandstone for drive?

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

A customer has requested an indian sandstone driveway. Probably something like a mango sandstone, which is graded at 25mm thick.

Now will this be ok for a drive? I've always just done normal patios out of this stone, and not driveways. I'm planning on 150mm compacted hardcore, 100mm compacted type 1, followed by a full bed of wet 40 - 50mm sand + cement (4 sharp, 1 soft, 1 dust).

Thanks

My mistake, I put 20mm in the title, but they are in fact 25mm.

The usual response is that it isnt ideal but if you must use indian stone on a driveway then it must be laid on 100mm concrete bed, preferably with a bond bridge (id use the bond bridge)

Id just stick to your standard subbase construction of 100/150mm type 1

So the thickness of 25mm, with the sub base I described, and an sbr slurry bond bridge should suffice?

Hi Chris,

I did quite a lot of research on this topic as my landscaping knowledge was next to none and I wanted to have sandstone laid on my driveway. I spoke to many landscapers and was advised that 25-30mm sandstone slabs would be sufficient if laid on a full mortar bed, not dot and dab. I had the driveway done and as of yet no issues whatsoever. I ended up going for some uncalibrated sandstone (as it was thicker) from an online company called LSD http://lsd.co.uk/indian-sandstone-paving-goa-sunset-patio-pack

Hope this helps

Further to this, use one of the harder indian sandstones and stick with the larger sizes.

I did a patio a few years ago, autumn brown sandstone, 3-4" type 1, 25-40mm 6:1, 4 size random pattern. Found out the new home owners have been parking their 4 wheel drive on it and only 1 slab broke which I was impressed with.

I've done a few hear in North Yorkshire, we laid on concrete, made up of 10mm ballast, at 3/4 inches deep, I made the joints slightly wider, 14/18mm, just so I can get more pointing mix in there, no problems whatsoever.

Haha brilliant. I use a lot of car forums and see this all the time. It's usually sly advertising of kitchens, which is a bit odd
