Water under a patio

I have a walkout basement. There is 5 feet of concrete patio when you step out of the house. The patio is at the same level as the basement floor. The material under the patio has sunk and there is now lots of water under there. I have been pumping it out. Once I have this pumped out is there a way to fill this gap so that water does not intrude. People have been telling me to shove gravel under neath but that is not really possible and I can't see how I can get the effect of a solid water proof foundation under the concrete. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you pump out the water, won't it just fill up again? Filling any voids with whatever will not prevent water collecting there - it will just cause the water to collect on top of the paving.
If there is no effective drainage for this sunken patio, your only real option is a sump drain with a pump and float switch.
