Flag stones at the front of a terraced house

Hi all,
I recent bought a mid terrace house, and one of the things I'd like to do is replace a path of loose gravel at the front of the house (between the front bay window and a small wall which borders the house with the pavement).
I have never laid flag stones before and would really appreciate any advice that you fine people could offer.
Below is the area I'd like to pave (the stones have since become discoloured and look awful now)

After having a good read through, I'll lay the tiles onto a coarse, grit sand bed. Since the area won't really get any foot-fall.
My only concern is how to handle the drainage, should I angle the fall to the brick wall bordering at the pavement and leave a gap between the edge of the pave stones and the wall to let water run into and drain down?
And lastly! Are there any alternatives to using a compactor on the bedding? It's quite a small area so I assume I'd only be able to cover a very small area with a compactor due to it's size?
