apart from aesthetics what are the advantages of a gabion type retainer over brickwork?
I like the look of the gabion but obviously you need room to build it
do you you need structural calcs for them?

Yes it's calculated, theres a software package that the engineer has or if you approach the manufacturer like hy-ten we use they will design as well
it starts with a 2mx.5 mattress them a 1.5m x .7 then 1x.7 then .7x.7
There's 10 ton of stone per 3.2 metre high linear metre
The advantage is cost and installation time because they are a mass wall in order to do it something else you'd either need the same weight or a more engineered solution using lots of concrete and rebar
I don't see how you'd get 10 tons/metre in block and brick
Plus once planted with ivy/herbs/creepers they soften fast into surroundings and there is a degree of flexibility which is great on a site egere parts are still moving as brick work might crack etc
