Hello
We recently had our garden redeveloped, including some sandstone paving. We're not very happy with the results, but as this is the only time we've had any paving done we're not sure how good or bad a job it really is.
Our problems are:
- The paving does not line up on a straight grid
- The stones are not all level with each other
- The gap between the stones is inconsistent throughout and generally much too big. It is up to 45mm.
- The mortar is often not flush to the levels of the stones
- The mortar is crumbling in places
I've included one pic per example, but each issue appears throughout.
Other than the crumbling, which obviously needs fixing, do you think that we have just have too high expectations, or that we have grounds to demand a refund to pay someone else to redo the job properly?
Any advice appreciated, if we're thinking about pursuing legals we want to make sure we're not being unreasonable.
Thanks
Archie

Sorry, I don't know the first thing about pointing, or the materials, so I can't say what it was. I do know that it was too soft the first time around and it literally washed away in the rain the first day he laid it. He had to go over it a second time, and I wonder if that is why the top layer is crumbling away in places.
Also there are pockmarks caused by the rain right across all the pointing, which is unsightly and collects dirt.
