Bitumen emulsion - tack coat ?? - Is it the same as the roofing stuff ??

Setts and cobbles, tarmac, asphalt, resin systems, concrete whether it's plain, patterned or stencilled, gravels, etc.

Hi All

Been after some of this but all the builders merchants near me look at me stupid when i ask for it.....One place had some stuff in aerosol can for jointing ?

Is the stuff in the can the tack coat or can i buy the stuff they have in B+Q (which i think is for roofing)

Thanks.

Is there a Tarmac depot by you that supply all the local road workers?

If there is, they sell it in 25 Ltr containers for about £30.

They know it as Bitumen Emulsion

The answer to your query is SORT OF. Yes, bitumen emulsion is a mixture of bitumen, clay, and water -- BUT...

Bitumen emulsion for roofs is generally a much softer grade of asphalt, designed to go a bit melty when it's warm so that it will continue to fill gaps and cracks in the roof surface.

Bitumen emulsion for driveways is a very hard grade of asphalt, designed to NOT go melty in the sun, so you won't get a whack upside the head from the missus because you tracked all that bitumen goo across her clean floors. It is also less likely to show tire tracks when warm, and is more resistant to petrol and other solvents.

Make VERY sure you have the right stuff for the job -- buy paving bitumen from paving merchants, and roof bitumen from construction merchants -- if you use the wrong stuff you'll have no recourse but to scrape the gooey stuff off and start over.

If you're still looking, you can get a tack coat (bituminous cationic bonding emsulsion) from your local Colas depot or from Greenham Trading
