Working on a very limited budget, I'm trying to turn my 45m sq garden from a mess of ruptured concrete into something useable. Of the quotes I've been given, the one that comes closest to being within reach (without breaking regulations)would lay a section of Marshalls Pendle riven "stone" rather than the real thing. Will it just look nasty, and will the "stone" start to disintegrate? Is this the PIC you're all talking about?
Also, would it be bad form to tell you all the quotation to see if you think it's reasonable?
Need advice - feeling a bit out of my depth!
Marshalls pendle utility paving - Nasty or cost-effective?

Marshalls' pendle flags are a 'budget' pressed riven effect flag. They're relatively thin (32mm, I think) and come in a single colour and a single size, so they can't be compared with more upmarket products such as the Marshalls' Heritage or Chancery.
They will never look like anything other than budget concrete flags, but they won't disintegrate. I strongly recommend you take a trip down to your local BM and ask to see samples or get yourself a copy of the Marshalls' catalogue - they're on page 81

From experience of using Marshalls Pendle flags.
From a pack of 20 flags, 3 will be broken before use and at least 5 more will break on the 1st hit with a rubber mallet.
They look awful and they tend to get a permanent white stain after a few weeks.
I know Budget is one of the main considerations when choosing Paving, but you only get what you pay for - the same applys to the Contractor you pick to lay the paving.
Cheap is almost certainley not cheerful.

That's the one that's almost idential to Raj Green Indian sandstone, innit? Much better product, but vastly overpriced. Did you check prices with other suppliers? The independent importers have the same stone for 50-100% less than you will pay through one of the nominated Marshalls' suppliers.

Oh... We've contracted someone to do the work for us, and that's the stone they've told us they use. It was that or more expensive Yorkstone, or same-priced Heritage stone or the cheap utility stone. The price, including labour (clearing concrete, excavating, laying stone) is nearly £100 per square metre. Do you think we're being foolish?
