I've had a firm verbal promise from one of the cttee mebers that he will ensure my comments are taken into consideration, even the ones he doesn't agree with.

We'll see!

I was advised yesterday that given the level of criticism about this proposed revision, there is very likely to be a complete re-write which will group pavements into three types: flexible construction; rigid contruiction; and permeable construction.

The work will be done by Interpave so I'm not sure how much relevance will be given to non-concrete paving, but surely it can't be any worse than the proposal we have at the moment, can it?

However, most worrying of all is the rumour (I've not had this confirmed yet) that the chairman, Ian Walsh, will not agree to the revised revision going out for public consultation on the grounds that he has a strict timetable and in his mind, keeping on schedule is more important than getting things right.

I know many of those on the B/507 committee won't say it publicly, but I will: The man is a fool. A dangerous pillock of a fool.

What he has delivered to date is an unreadable, illogical, spewed-up dog's dinner. If it is correct that he's been offered a face-saving re-write and if he does indeed decree that such a re-write is not afforded the scrutiny of those of us who earn our living in the paving trade, then he should be removed.

Sorry, I don't like to denigrate individuals, but when the trade I love is under threat from nonsense and drivel, then one man's self-importance may have to be skewered.

I'm an outsider. I have no commercial tie-in with any of the powerful forces in the industry and I'm too gobby.

They get me to write stuff when it suits them, but when it comes to setting standards that will have a commercial impact, a neutral, impartial, practically-minded voice which raises uncomfortable questions is the last thing that's wanted.

I never have been, and never will be, part of the Old Boy's Club.
