Vehicles or combinations of vehicles with a maximum permissible mass not exceeding 7.5 tonnes that
are used for :
for carrying materials, equipment or machinery for the driver’s use in the course of his work.
These vehicles shall be used only within a 50 km radius of the base of the undertaking and on the condition that driving the vehicle does not constitute the driver’s main activity.

This would apply to tradesmen such as electricians or builders carrying tools or materials for their own use.

Thinking of getting the licence to drive a 7.5t lorry and was planning on towing the digger behind. Does what you state above mean that because it's more than 7.5t total I'd need a tacho?
Also what are the requirements for where you keep the lorry? I spoke with vosa and she seems to think I can get 13 weekly inspections which would be great. The only thing I can't determine is where can I keep it?
The guys who do my muck away think that as long as the place is secure and has a hard standing that's it. My place would just be a type 1 base although I suppose I could chuck down 30m of blocks as a parking space if needed.

If you want to use a 7.5t wagon to tow a mini-slew around, you'll be needing a full C1+E licence.....££££

youll need c1+e to tow more than 750kg behind a wagon, its another test ontop of your wagon test
the rules for o license yards are tough
you need specific requirements on access and sight lines, you need advertisements in the local paper etc asking for objections, you need a wedge in the bank think its £5.5k or more
get a restricted operator license or what most do is pay for a spot in a yard that already has one
2. Licence requirements
If you are applying for a standard or restricted licence, you must satisfy a traffic commissioner that you:
u are of good repute and fit to hold a licence;
u are of appropriate financial standing
(i.e. you have enough money to run your business);
u have good enough facilities (or arrangements) for maintaining your vehicles; and
u are capable of ensuring that both you and your staff obey all the rules.
Operating centres
Your operating centre should provide sufficient off street parking for all your vehicles and trailers.
Key requirements

What does environmentally suitable mean?
Technically my driveway is ok. It's off road, it's a hard standing, not sure it could be deemed secure, I.e there's no gates etc.
What a pita it all is, willing to do the licence, money in bank, want to progress but it's just not as easy as that is it
My concern is that I won't know if it's worth having one until I actually do it. Muck away is usually grabs, most stuff gets delivered. It's those little jobs where it would help, or ones where I'm a few miles from a tip and can get rid of hardcore for free, that and being able to put the digger on the back, not mess about doing multiple trips when I need a couple of ton of stone and a ton of sand etc etc.

To have a operating centre at you house you must be able to turn it arond in side the yard, not allowed to reverse onto highway
Dont keep thinking apply and see what they say, its not as hard as it seams, I rent my operating centre from a local HGV garage, but only park it there for a last resort, costs around £2 a day to use it
If there is 2 loads of muck away I use lorry, anymore and its a 20yrd skip or grab,
I would not be without it, if collecting concrete or aggregates I spoon it off with the 3tonner straight to where I want it, so easy , MSH

Right, I think I'll apply this week. I know a place that I can keep it at, my mechanic is based there and reckons a quid a day, nice
So may well sack off the trailer idea and get the lorry, saves the aggro.
Do you know if you have the lorry licence (c1 ? ). Does that mean you automatically can tow with say a normal van upto the 7t gross or is that a totally different requirement.
Seen a perfect canter, it's an 08 and has an ally tipper, very tidy but too soon to buy maybe before I even have applied. Possibly a shame as I've been looking for a while at these and it appears ally tippers rarely come up

you need to do c1 +e test to tow more than 750kg with wagon, if you pass c1 +e the plus +e is the extra theory and practical for trailers you get a car entitlement to tow trailers as well

you need to do a c1+e to tow above 750kg with 7.5 tonner even if you passed test before 97, I am currently doing mine and I passed my test before 97. It is costing me £700 all in. I have been driving my 7.5 ton wagon for years with digger and trailer on back of it. Just done my driver cpc and found out I cant tow more than 750kg that's why having to do license.

when did this change or has it always been the case, I have read of a change of the CPC being a requirement this year but not the limit of only 750kg
I took my class 2 (HGV2) as it was called in 98 but let it lapse 5 years later as I gave up the idea of buying a wagon until now, the test I took entitiled me to drive any size rigid including a draw bar which is some size rig seeing as I had only just passed my test
