Lay a step against damp proof course?

Other groundworks tasks, such as roads and footpaths, terracing, fencing, foundations, walls and brickwork, tools and plant.

I am creating a new patio in the garden and you could say that I am a novice. A basic question – I need to create a step between the house and the patio. Can I lay the step blocks against the damp proof course – i.e. it would cover part of the damp proof course against the house? Would this create any problems as far as the damp proofing is concerned? I guess most steps would be laid that way – but I just want to be totally certain as I have read in your archives that the damp proof course is one of the most important criteria when laying flagstones.

Many thanks for your help.

The usual "150mm below DPC" maxim is waived when it comes to steps and ramps at thresholds. There are a number of 'workarounds' that can maintain the integrity of the DPC, but for your project, a simple 6-100mm gap between step and masonry would be adeqaute ... probably.
