White patches on paving flagstones - White patches appearing on new paving

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

Can anyone solve this problem? I had new paving laid about two months ago. It looks perfect apart from white rimmed patches after drying. Is this just the excess cement or a problem with the flags? I have washed and brushed the area. Just seems strange...

If only there was a whole section of FAQs which covered problems such as this. :(

Oh look! There is, and 'white stuff on my paving' is the very first one listed. Who'd have thunk it?!

sometimes you get picture framing around the perimeter of the flags
what type of stone/slabs are they?
