Hi can anyone help with this one, i'm making a new section of gravel drive using pea shingle, but the last time I repaired a section I used mot as my sub base and whacker plated it down then put the pea shingle on top, the problem is after time the large bits of mot come to the top and mix with the gravel. I don't want to put a membrane between the mot and gravel as i think this looks horrible when the gravel moves and you can see it.
Is there anything else i could as a sub base or whacker plate on to the mot to bind it together?
Thanks in advance.

The Type1 (it hasn't really been "MoT" since the early 80s) should not migrate if properly compacted. What are you using? A farty little plate or a big beefy roller? Guess which is the right answer!
The whole raison d'etre for Type 1 is that it's a carefully chosen blend of particle sizes that maximises the interlock and so creates a stable, non-migrating, but flexible sub-base.
There are two primary reasons why it might migrate:
1 - it's not genuine DTp1
2 - it's not been compacted properly
...there are other reeasons, such as groundwater movement and frost heave, but I'd hazard a guess it's one of the two.

the amount of shit that gets sold by ppl as mot is scary especially the less reputable builders merchants and aggregate suppliers
saying that i had a load direct from cemex the other day that was shocking, was mainly 50-80mm and no dust refused it and they gave me a proper load free of charge and offered to grab wagon the other stuff away or i could keep it, we kept it used it as sub sub base

we had 100 ton of limestone MOT out of the Tarmac yard in Salford earlier on this year, they bring it in via trains from Buxton
I complained about the amount of fines and was told they are allowed up to 68% fines, it will not be on any more of my jobs as it does not compact and we got no back up what so ever, to put it bluntly its absolutely shite and this is from one of the largest companies in the world
