the reality is IMHO that the cost of cleaning specific stains may outweigh the cost of replacing the affected stone

I dont know what this specific stain would cost to put right but surely given sun wind rain and ice it will disperse itself given time?

cheers LLL
LLL,
Yes it will over time, but oily stuff can take ages to evaporate plus while waiting will just get dirty and then this seems to "stain" the surface in an other way. Agree sometimes could be cheaper to replace then clean/resolve, it depends on what you are trying to put right really.
Where things get expensive, is the products used.

Thank you for the information, Roger, and for the comments, lutonlagerlout. I think we will be at least investigating having the patio professionally cleaned - so a contact in our area would be much appreciated Roger. I will email you with our area and email address details.
I am a bit encouraged (but it may be wishful thinking) that small parts of the less intense staining seem to have faded a bit so we will wait for a few days to see how it goes - I will report back on any progress. I think though that the patio deserves a professional clean anyway.

WD40 does not contain fish oil, that's simply an Internet myth!
