Mortar for laying patio - - full bed or circle and spot?

What a plonker, he must only be a trowel full of a full bed, so why not do it right, ie; full bed of compo' ???

Thanks very much, all. I think you may, with your combined wisdom (and probably combined 100+ years in the trade!), have saved me much grief! Probably explains why he is cheaper than the others!

I shall certainly be very circumspect about this - like getting another tradesman to quote me tonight! I shall certainly also be coming to you if I need more advice.
