Hey

I have a sloping garden so have dug out around 20 tonnes now to get a level area roughly 20 ft x 20ft.

I am going to build a sleeper retaining wall for the drop and have this sloping down around the sides. Most of the area will be gravelled although I will use the sleepers to edge a raised area for a patio.

The ground is heavy clay and it is difficult to get it perfectly level as I am digging by hand (no access for digger).

Before I start to lay my sleepers should I first of all lay a weed membrane and then whacker MOT1 to get a firm base for the entire area with a gentle run off or do I only really need to do this inside the area I am going to be building the patio on?

I know the best answer would probably be membrane it all, MOT1 and whacker then membrane then build and gravel but I dont want to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut if you know what I mean.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated about this sort of thing.

Yes a geo textile and type 1 should be under the sleeper wall. however, how much, height are you trying to hold back with these sleepers?
