Having read up on this site, I understand how to lay a drain. My question is, how many drains do I need in my lawn??
We have a flat quarter acre back garden bordered on one side by a field used for grazing and on the other side by a neighbour's garden. The lawn becomes very boggy after heavy rain, and even after moderate rain it is not great for children to play on for some days. The water table is high and there is clay in places about half a metre down.
At the end of the plot we have access to a 2m deep inspection chamber for pipework that allows water to drain away from the local road - this old drain runs for hundreds of yards across the field to the local stream and works ok.
I want to lay land drains in the lawn (as recommended here at 1m deep) to drain into the inspection chamber.
I think I need a "feather" layout of land drains but I don't know how to work out how many drains in total I should lay. Can anyone help with this, please??
Thanks for reading this post and happy draining!

It's a trade off between the cost and effort
You don't want to go mad either or it'll be desiccated in summer
Just spread them out so you cover most the garden when we do we have between 3-5 metres between drains depending on how wet it is.
Where abouts are you?

Hi Giles
Thanks for the reply. We're not a million miles from you - Macclesfield! Looked at your gallery and you do some good stuff.
There are areas of our garden which are boggier than others - there you can jump up and splash your wellies even after a few days of no rain. So I guess in those areas we'll go for more channels and less in the places where it's not so wet. I can't imagine our lawn ever being dessicated!!
Your yardstick of 3m to 5m between channels is a good starter. Thanks for that!
Good luck
