Thought it was going to be cheese and garlic. Was disappointed when I heard it was methyl mercaptan. It's one of the smelliest substances on Earth, it's what they add to natural gas to make it smell (natural gas has no odour).
My Dad used to sell the stuff, said samples used to arrive in a container, in a container, in a container and you could still smell it across the room.

i did smell this on tues am, here in sth. bucks. My missus sense of smell is zero, whereas mine is truly amazing.
Had she dropped a tray of 3 doz leftover & slightly dodgy eggs?
the gas was mercaptan, which is added to odour-free natural gas so that gas escapes can be detected, as its own odour (although the gas is harmless) is among the most powerful of all – detectable in concentrations as tiny as one part in 2.8 billion.

Very sorry to hear that LLL - our experience was the opposite in the Jura - we were young - my feeling is it doesn't matter where you are, you meet & great superb mechanic or you don't.
They were lovely with us - overnite stay etc...

my mate got a contract to paint a chateau in aix-en-provence
the whole time he was there he saw the girl in the bakers and the girl in the offlicense
he said the whole town seemed to go to bed at 9 pm
I think the big thing for me is that like us they refuse to speak any other language unless it suits them
the spanish dutch and germans all speak flawless english
