They said the first couple of months of 2013 would see some big names come crashing down.

This is nearly 16000 jobs jobs gone in January so far with these failures. Very sad times.

didnt realise blockbuster had gone but as had been said they wiped out loads of independents in their day
my mate and his dad had a video shop in luton in 1980
they called it blockbusters and 20 years later this now defunct blockbuster chain took them to the cleaners over the name they had for 20 years
so he started up again as findthatfilm.com

he was doing well at that and had 6 fulltime staff selling dvds mail order and over the interweb

but then amazon started doing all their stuff from jersey and the 17.5% VAT advantage at that time destroyed his business over night

Its a shame people losing their jobs, but before we get teary eyed remember all the little men (like most of us on here) who were wiped out without a second thought by the faceless CEOs and their corporate ,share holder driven decisions back in luxembourg or the cayman islands

We used to have a video van come around where we used to live.

A great galumphing box van crudely kitted out with dexion shelving and those plastic crates/baskets that they used to deliver loaves to the shops, all filled with VHS tapes of variable quality and provenance, with a special one right at the top near the back "for the dads".

Last time i was behind the counter in Picture Palace Tony there was a queue for that blockbuster of a movie Grease 2, so i reckon that must of been around 82/83.

Do you remember the days when if the 2 or 3 copies of the film you were after were out they would put you on a list and let you know when it came back in lol.

Now you dont have to leave the house, its instant and you can watch it on your bloody phone. :)

I used to love looking at the adult film boxes stacked in the local video rental shop when I was a lad and giggling with my friends!

How things change, now the frigging stuff comes down the bloody phoneline, free of charge!!!! :0

No Tony think hes a bit younger than me and that was pretty much the last time i had owt to do with the Southern arm of the family, and to be honest i dont think i would know Lee Ross now if i bumped into him :)

This thread got me thinking what an event it used to be to get a film in the early days, most were crap but a few good movies were available think my first few were something like;

Jaws (great Movie)
Assault on Precinct something or other (loads of synth music)
Chainsaw Massacre (Shite)

oh yeh and Debbie Does Dallas

The worst memories of the video van for us was "Pink Flamingos" with Devine, OMG that was awful :( and Animal Farm.

Over and out.

animal farm oh dear :)

in the late 70's I worked on an extension in the evenings and weekends doing the joinery and the home owner used to sell top shelf stuff via exchange and mart, it was when deep throat had been released and he would be doing copies all the time plus many other films too, a 4 day job took 3 weeks as every time I started work I would turn round and the TV was on :)

we started a job in the 80's and the punter was from leicester (dont know why i remember this but he had a funny accent)
anyway we were hand digging the footing and he said "do you want a drink lads?" i turned round and he had a bottle of scotch and cans of beer
so not wishing to appear rude we went in for a drink
he then chimes up with "do you like dirty movies?"
so again not wishing to offend him we agreed to a preview
OMG bad move
it was a home made one of various people and his 20 stone missus :(
I couldnt even drink a cup of tea off him after that
