so i thought id share these i was out shooting on wednesday morning as i was up early before the sun and i ended up at teh base of mamtor on the old manchester to sheffield road before it slipped down the valley and you now have to use the winnats pass rd,
mamtor, half of it collapse a long time ago making the lower slopes unstable
the old road in some places the asphalt is 1 metre thick!!

the view from it though lafarges cement works chimney can just been seen poking through the mist, used to be blue circle cement
chimney and peveral castle which gives castelton its name

Lovely 'photos. Thanks. I remember the old road from the early '60s. (When did it close?) There were lots of sections where repairs had been made. I suppose that accounts for the thickness of the surface. Do people still call Mam Tor the "Shivering Mountain"?
I once got stuck in a Morris 1000 in deep snow on the little road that goes over to Edale. It was fun digging out. I doubt I'd think that these days.

That's much better. Even India looks good behind the wheel, and on what looks like a track.
Minors were pretty good off-road. I took my Dad's all over Lake District tracks (for example the Old Coach Road from St John's in the Vale) in 1962 until he discovered a great dent in the sump following a trip to Devoke Water. That led me to getting an old Land Rover 80" which is what I was using in Derbyshire in the bad winter of '62/3 (I think it was).
Are those side lights original? I think our '57 Minor 1000 used trafficators.

Stunning photies, Gi. I wish I was still fit enough to get up to that part of the Peak. The best I can manage these days is the Cat and Fiddle and then back through Rainow on the bike.
I can't compete with Gi's artistry, but I think this is the best non-paving photie I've taken this week. Bear in mind that I can't go out in the frost because of the angina and the risk of slipping, so this was taken from my study window....
