I've just laid a new patio in concrete flagstones (Bradstones Old Town weathered limestone) and cut some of the flags to fit a tray type manhole cover, thus trying to give the impression of a continuous pattern of flagstones. But what should I use to fill the gap between the cut edge of the flags and the manhole cover edge in order to make this impression convincing? If I use sand and cement, as I intend to do for the pointing, then the gaps within the flags will be more obvious.

you point the joints in the slabs but the recessed cover you just have to cut your flags accurately i.e. 2-3 mm tolerance max
