monkey here to. Used to like it as it kept you fit without going to the gym. Had to put ip the scaffolding to. Always stayed late to load out and work saturdays to load out. Hardly any tea breaks then but made up for it on the pub. Could pick up a hod full of engineering bricks onto shoulder with one hand. Lads on our job never ever used a hod, tey are banned. Shame really it should be a cpmmunity sevice order for offenders, especially mps :;):

You got to love the way China packs them in. Over 30,000 people living in one building.

Speaking of ladders i have just recovered from a bad fall off a ladder. Was sorting out some fascia when some young teens messing about on a scooter clipped the bottom of the ladder and down i came. Four cracked ribs, stomach muscle damage, Ankle fracture and for some reason half of the nails on my fingers missing along with several other bruises etc. But hey i'm still here

jeez sorry to hear that colm
hope you are right for xmas
I agree Sean,I was 10 stone on the hod,5 and 2 gang,i was on bricks and blocks and muck martin was on the muck hod
martin was a legend,he could load out 7000 bricks on his own on a saturday
if a bricklayer ever had to ask him for anything he took it very personal, he was later 40s then but he used to dye his hair jet black

the building game is poorer without the characters from those days, everyone got a savage nickname

i got in the van on day 1 and my hair was sticking up,some wag said "he looks like frankenstein's monster!" so i got stuck with frankie for 2 years :)

another lad had a big beard, and the driver said said they were told to pick up a man outside the foresters who looked like a monkey, so chimp it was even when he shaved it off

little steve had a bright red face so he got called "apple"

I still have a muck hod giles, that would make your eyes water ,half a barrow of muck in that

I used to have a lad on site called 'fat hod'. He wasn't fat, just huge, but still it was. Now his gaffer, 'fat trowel' he was a fat c***.

I remember a hod carrier many years ago that looked like he was carrying a wheelbarrow on his shoulder up the ladder with no hands, h&s would love that

Not so much the monkey but they used to reckon good hod carriers needed the qualities of a horse: the back of a shire horse; the legs of a race horse; and the brains of a rocking horse!
