well boyos have been asked to tender for some paving works in leeds take up 140m2 70mm sawn york laid on 100mm bed on tarmac base . its failed big time cracked flags movement unsafe there spec to remedy remove all paving good ones store for re use by client remove beding to base coat ,ps they want this to start early november spec to use 200mmx150mmx150mm sawn six sides york stone ,my first price for setts £169.95 m2 ex works johnsons huddesfield circa24k beding stientec tuffset g rapid set 70kg per m2 =£10k jointing same tuffset g £9k work has to be done in 5 days ps complete site fenched in path ways for pedestrions and they want 30 days credit :p my answer pro forma on all materials and money up front ,would need a big magic wand for this one dont think some one has done there sums on the spec looking like £450m2 to do the job think some heads will get chopped ???

massive amount of traffic and big stress on turning axles lots of foot traffic unless they agree to payments structure i will leave well alone ???

they got back to me job is on hold exceeds the budget they also said they wont pay pro forma invoice on materials. i said nicely stick it where the sun dont shine the job was outside the hilton leeds granary wharf

if they call back i'll buy the materials for you, but you'll have to up the price to clean £500 pm and give me the difference, after all they didn't say no to the price just paying upfront!!!

i wouldnt want to be shelling out 40 k on material on a 5 day job ,and then have to wait 4 weeks for getting paid
lot of big commercial paving and tarmaccing firms here want money up front

I've spoken to a lot of very nervous contractors over recent weeks. Increasingly, they are being asked, if not expected, to put plant, labour and materials onto 50K+ jobs and agree to payment when the work is signed off, which could be months down the line.

Given the precarious financial health of many developers and main contractors just now, I'd be exceptionally wary of anything that involved me waiting more than a week for my money!

i just priced some footings for a project manager, for an extension some one else doing the build he said the first draw down wasn't untill the walls were up, i was like but im not doing that you can pay me when the slabs are in... nope. i was like no thanks

Money up front, stage payments on time or tools go down, money on completion or legs start getting broken :laugh:

I know it make me seem small minded ,but we have survived and prospered by working 90% of the time direct for clients
the only other 2 being a major irish PLC who have punitive terms but pay very well , and our own sweet council

every firm I know of that has been knocked or gone skint ,it is always on a commercial or subcontract project,where they have been waiting on 6-12 weeks money and when one goes POP the rest fall like dominoes

most people in their own homes tell you straight if they can afford it
developers and main contractors will say anything to get the work done

Idid at one time do a fair bit of work for hackney council ,whilst the rates where good you did,nt see the money for months,eventually the battle to get paid was more ag than the job was worth.Now i try and stick to home owners & a few trusted builders,not that i want to much worka my age !!!!!

funny thing tools,never get the urge to part with them!even if u dont use them from one year to the next.Still got cast iron harris trowel i got forty one years ago,same stanley clawhammer for thirty years etc etc.my wife cant understand why i still buy stuff at fairs and auctions,the old excuse that it will come in usefull in the barn(doing barn conversion for us) dos,nt cut the mustard anymore.loads of you boys must be the sane or worse!...........ps its only hand tools,things with engines (except tractor) can come & go .so im afraid its a no .
