I dont know what he was thinking
but its no good and needs to come out
the pointing should be flush or there abouts to the top of the flags

Complete amateurish
The only reason that you've got the bottom layer in is because he couldn't be arsed to scrape the excess out of the joints after laying.

Your better of rid of him, if he's producing work of that standard

Steve is right with the above comment, a terrible job and will not last

all the pointing needs to be removed including the excess bedding between the flags using a grinder to get more depth for the pointing otherwise it will just keep falling out- you need at least 20mm depth

thanks for all the advice... one thing I want to clarify though... a few of you mention excess bedding... this was not bedding from putting the slabs down... there was no excess material in between the gaps previously... it was put in as part of the pointing, THEN the sandy stuff on top. So unless its the same material as the bedding underneath the slabs, its not bedding, but stuff put in afterwards part of the pointing.

ok so maybe he has pointed between the flags but kept it low down for what ever reason, double work really but if you have had a bad spell of weather like we have experienced in the north west for the last 4 weeks then maybe he thought he would save a bit of time by partially filling the joints and top them up later or he was hoping to get away with the height he had already pointed which looks like he has used a brick jointer or similar tool

the sandy colour pointing looks like a weak mix of semi dry brushed in and quickly strike with a brick jointer or pointing trowel and the surplus brushed off, you can see that due to the surface texture not being smooth

what ever way you look at it every method he has implemented is not the correct way of pointing paving joints
