Was lifting a section of tarmac yesterday to install a new gulley and connections for linear drains as part of a paving job around the back.
It was a 3 foot wide entrance to the back of the house between the garage and the kitchen so i had a look in the garage and sure enough the boiler was in there so thought i'd be careful.
I had to cut the bitmac to avoid lifting the rest of it when levering up the section to be removed so i thought i'll just make a saw cut 2 inches or so and then dig it all by hand until i find the heating pipes.......
CH Feed pipe was 40mm under the finished surface of the bitmac. The guy had even removed the insulation from the top to get the required depth of black above it.
I;ve come across ntl cables shallower than this but never a pipe, god knows how it didn;t freeze.
11kv under 20mm of chippings in path at side of a house rubbed a micro digger grading bucket across it! I didnt CAT it as i was only cleaning off chippings not breaking ground.....
At least NTL did not charge for fixing their cable the last time I damaged one in my garden (many years ago in a past house). If you want the NTL cable at a reasonable depth you must put in a duct for them.
