Mr LLL I work for my fathers company surface heating systems ltd, origanally he started with trace heating etc but expanded to heating of drives/paving/ramps after using his own house as guinea pig. The system works by Laying trace cables under the new surface, these cables are attatched to a controller and snow sensor. The snow sensor(usually roof mounted) triggers the controller, the control unit triggers heated cable

The beauty of the system is it can be installed to only activate when it snows or temperatures drop(de-ice) and can also be combined to do both. Plus the whole drive does not need to be heated, only enough for tyre tracks in some cases.
If you would like an example have a look at the website, for some reason I cannot upload an image. The upper image is a property in Ballymena and the lower is his first project installed in 2000 (new photo from this year).
Costs are dependant on scale but not overly expensive e.g a recent 10m (2x 10m tracks) drive would be in region of £1300-£1800 but price really depends on the product a customer wants where job is scale and how long it takes to install.
Oh and doesnt include laying the new surface, unless someone wants to teach me how to?
