Looking at levels, so as to avoid a step with the pavement I will have MOT at close to or above ground level. The MOT may be up to 40cm deep, as I have bug down to solid ground.
The soil level will be increased to match the level of the new path; however it will all be lose soil.

I assume I need to put the MOT down in 10cm layers compacting in layer before adding the next.

What sort of edge support do I need as I wish to plant close to the edge of the path?

Put a cover of 150mm of type one down concrete your edges in to levels and falls then bring up your subbase to required hight

The solution (maybe good, maybe bad!) I thought of after asking the question (as I have lots of old 2inch plain paving stones).

Dig a trench that is about 6 inches wide cantered on the edge of the paving and/or use form work.

Concrete the old paving stones on edge into this – about 10cm below and 15cm up each side

With the tops of the old paving stones below level with the top of the paving

Set the edging behind this support after building up the MOT

So saving some concrete and part of a skip, as well as getting an edge that will not be undermined by double digging the garden.

But will the 2inch paving be strong enough to cope with compacting the MOT?
