in giles defence, I dont think he meant it like that
in the states its "trailer park trash" and here its " sink estates"
europe doesnt seem to do it like we do, although naples has the notorious scampia estate which is the worlds biggest drug supermarket.
the fault lies with successive governments who move poorer people to areas with less employment and less prospects
I was speaking to a social worker the other day and i asked him why kids from london where put into care homes in rotheram and warrington etc etc
and its purely cost
apparently a troubled teenager costs 4 grand a week to place in london
up north its a bit cheaper so they ship them up there
disgrace really
FTR I was brought up on an estate and i think home life is far more relevant to a person's future than where you live
as kids we used to talk about the *private * houses, like they were some form of forbidden world, but my dad worked 7 days a week and my mum did other part time jobs so we made the best of it
most people I know who havent done too well come from broken homes,
cheers LLL

sean i wasnt born with a silver spoon, my dads just a boy done good from nothing in gorton, he wanted his kids to have more than him always worked for himself and made a success at it, there are still sweeping generalisation about europeans etc as expressed in this post, if you look at the percentage of families we have on estates that have noone in work its scary, my mate who was in munich with me lost his wallet on the train he had his rent in it as well over 600 euros. a german man picked it up, found his work id in it, drove it to our office and handed it back to him. id be surprised if that happened over here in any area of the country,

its a lifestyle choice here for certain people
my brother has been diagnosed as ADHD and autistic,he now has a 2 bed flat a car and £150 per week disability money to get by on
for him to do that working he would have to be on £400 per week take home
so theres no incentive
and as for the diagnosis, when he was a kid he was marked down as a tearaway
now they have names for everything

Just had a couple of scoops in the local, heard a lad who has come out of a divorce with a few quid saying how hes going to blow the lot on travel, when it runs out hes coming back and will apply for a council flat/house.

I reckon a limit of 1 year on benefits unless disabled, council houses being like the 'almost favelas' that I saw in Brazil.... which consisted of a tiny wetroom, 1 bedroom and a tiny kitchen. I deliver gas to a lot of dumps that all have satelite dishes outside, 50" plasma tvs inside with all the latest consoles, Iphones etc

i was born and bred on council estates, good parents like you giles. At one stage their was 10 kids being clothed and fed by my parents. The nab means tested you in those days. We had many a meal etc by dubious means. I worked from 13 and payed my way in the family. Yes i would of given the wallet, money etc; back but at the same time i would of robbed ( and did actually ) someone who was well off rather than let my family go hungtyGB_Groundworks wrote:sean i wasnt born with a silver spoon, my dads just a boy done good from nothing in gorton, he wanted his kids to have more than him always worked for himself and made a success at it, there are still sweeping generalisation about europeans etc as expressed in this post, if you look at the percentage of families we have on estates that have noone in work its scary, my mate who was in munich with me lost his wallet on the train he had his rent in it as well over 600 euros. a german man picked it up, found his work id in it, drove it to our office and handed it back to him. id be surprised if that happened over here in any area of the country,
