What's a les base?

Hi, I have received a quote from a Brett approved installer to lay Sandstone fossil mint.
Part of the written quote it states to lay on lea base.
Can Someone help to explain what a lea base is? I have googled it but cannot work it out.

I would of thought he meant to type lean base which means its a weak mixture of sand and cement like 8:1 10:1

in my opinion its advisable to have a stronger mix for bedding the paving like a 4:1 and to SBR the rear side of the paving before being laid

I'd just stick with the lean base and forget the Foissil Mint, which is just about the most useless of all the imported sandstones. Even a 10:1 mix would out-perform that crumbly, algae-ridden rubbish.

Mickg, I will find the quote tomorrow and check because i am sure it states lea mix base plus a bed of concrete for the slab.

Tony McC, that's thrown a spanner in the works. I have just started looking at various products. To be honest it's all glossy in the brochure and looks great etc etc but it does all start to look the same after a while.

Do you recommend and products or brands to look at. The area is medium i would say about 28m2. Any advice would be appreciated.

I found the quote that was provided:
- Take up existing slabs, dig out grass area 6". Nb existing slabs are laid on soil!
- Lay lea mix base on patio area
- lay block edging
- lay sandstone on wet sand and cement
- paint gaps on 3 x 1 mortar mix
- 5 year guarantee

The company I have received the quote from has been around a number of years and the results look good based on one of his clients I visited. My only concern is the base especially from reading this forum and the website the base is extremely important.

Any further advise is appreciated.

Some of the Yorkstones you can buy are just as soft as fossil mint and turn green just as quickly. Generally the slabs with the fossils in are the real soft ones. the more consistently coloured slabs are generally harder. I layed some fossil in my mums garden in 2002 and its still ok. It needs cleaning a couple of times a year but its no big deal.

The harder Indian sandstones are stones like raj green, autumn brown and kandla grey. Not sure if brett will call them the same names but they are all quarried in the Kota region of Rajasthan India. However the colours of these stones are much darker than the fossil mint

Sounds like he is using a lean mix instead of a Type 1 subbase which in itself sounds daft?

point gaps.....sounds like chancer talk to me, id put that as "paving to be jointed with......"

If that is his quote word for word it sounds very amateurish to me?
