Anyone had issues with this before ??? Circular raised mark on the face of the limestone, 4or 5 inches in dia, with 5 smaller circles with it....

Photo to follow. 50 odd flags, 10 marked with the same "scar"

1 blade scar. what confuses me is : If a flag is buffed after the face is cut to size, then this scar would be a indentation, NOT a raised portion ?

Anyone care to enlighten me?

That is a natural bulge (like a knot in wood) in limestone I have come across many times

i'll need to get a better photo.

(im not saying your wrong, im just not not convinced)

its a perfect circle, with 5 perfect circles within it. there are exactly the same marks on more than 6 of my flags, so i presumed it wasn't a natural occurance. to make it less natural, all the affected flags are the same size in a random pack :-)

k13wjd is it 6 sided sawn?
if not the gloves are off mate
any natural material can have all sorts of humps bumps and marks
if you want perfection then probably use 6 sided sawn or pre cast slabs

If the flag surface is undressed and has just been split and the edges trimmed then it' something that has naturally occured and your paving is just a cross section of it from when they moved through the block. Tell everyone it's a dinosaur footprint.
Can't see it from my house

no, they are riven black limestone, edges are hand cut, faces are machined by the looks of it, most are very flat, only 1 of the big 900x600 has a big fall in it, like 10mm over the 600 wide ( in the centre). That one will get changed i'd think.

I'll aim to get a better photograph.

i'll double check that theory, by looking to see if the marks are all aligned the same on each flag. If they were cut from a block, i'd think they would fairly similar. :-)

T rex i tell you.

How can it be riven with a machined face?

That stone is not machine cut. When you machine saw black limestone the surface goes like glass, nobody does it. Its a naturally split product. The mark you refer to is a natural feature of the stone.

Dont want to appear rude but there is no theory to double check, you can study the mark all day and it will still be a natural mark

thanks for the input guys - i understand now. the supplier had a look, and was quite happy to swap the ones i wasn't happy with. still left with some nice imprints which i've grown to love.

the ones they gave me have some lovely peices of fools gold in them - they'll look awesome.
