I got myself some very nice 4 inch square bright granite cobbles today.

Think the guy mis-priced them, as they were less than half the price of other places....160 cobbles@41p each( £65!!! ). I bought them to cover 16m linear, leaving extra to allow me to pick the best of a good bunch. 10mm pointing, perhaps darkish.

They are tumbled, so will look great.

Anyway, I'll be using them as a simple border between grass and some pebbles. Ground is currently 4 inches of compacted sand.

I'm after options for fixing them in place. I've pegged and lined the inside edge, so was thinking of digging a 100mm deep trench, filling it with 4:1 and sinking the cobs in to a depth of 50mm ( leaving 50mm exposed, the same 50mm depth of gravel, and the overall height of my trimmed grass.

Also, a good few of them need a wash( just covered in granite dust. options ? hot water and flash ?? pressure washer ?? old fashioned scrubbing ? )

k13wjd they are called cubes
cobbles are rounded by the sea
your plan sounds ok but i would rather 150 mm of concrete with 50 exposed ,then that 50mm pointed with birds beak pointing

see, my i thought that, and was told that cobbles are infact square..... but then again, my Mrs calls pebbles " cobbles"
Still, that a sensible price for granite "cubes" They have a cracking finish when washed, lots of shiny bits !

Anyhow, your 150mm, deep i presume, as opposed to wide or easier just to do both ????? this garden is the one that never gets used, so doesn't need to be UBER strong. shouldnt need much concrete, 16mx150mmx150mm is 0.36m3 volume, displace that with setts 50mm deep, and 100x100...160*( 5x10x10)/1000=80l ( so 0.08m3)

0.3m3 then ;-)

no. looked there. he had very dull granite. with commercial edges( like you might used to form a kerb). only 2 sides were roughed up. £1 each. they also had smaller 2 inch cubes, at 60 oddp + vat, bright granite.

Got that now carberry, granite setts is what i have !!!

the guys at brick and stone seem decent, they have some weird and wonderfull items too, and some fairly decent brick selections !
